5 things you should never ignore in the early stages of dating

The early stages of dating can be a little confusing. You are excited to hear from them, you replay conversations in your head, and sometimes, you are so busy wondering whether they like you that you forget to ask yourself a more important question: Do I actually like how I feel around them? When you are getting to know someone, it is easy to explain away small things. Maybe they cancelled twice because they were busy. Maybe they disappeared for a few days and came back with a casual “hey”. Maybe they made a joke that did not sit right with you.One incident does not tell you everything about a person. But patterns usually do.Here are five things worth paying attention to before you get too emotionally invested.

1. You are constantly confused about where you stand

Dating does not always come with immediate clarity. You may not know what someone wants after two dates, and that is completely normal. But there is a difference between taking things slowly and being kept in a permanent state of confusion. If they are warm one day, distant the next, talk about liking you but avoid every conversation about what they actually want, or keep you guessing about whether this is going anywhere, pay attention to how that uncertainty makes you feel. You should not have to become a detective just to understand someone’s interest.Sometimes, the confusion itself is information.

2. They do not respect small boundaries

You do not need to wait for a huge argument to understand whether someone respects your boundaries.Notice the little things. If you say you are not comfortable sharing something yet and they keep pushing, you say you are busy and they make you feel guilty for not replying, or you clearly say no to something and they keep trying to change your mind, do not brush it aside because you otherwise like them.Early dating is actually when boundaries are easiest to observe. Both people are still learning what makes the other person comfortable.Someone who respects a small boundary without turning it into a personal insult is showing you something important about how they may handle bigger ones later.

3. You keep making excuses for their behaviour

This one can be surprisingly easy to miss, especially when you really like someone. You find yourself explaining their behaviour to your friends before they even ask.“They are just bad at texting.”“They have been stressed lately.”“They did not mean it like that.”“They are actually very sweet when you get to know them.”Maybe all of those things are true. But if you constantly need to build a case for why someone’s behaviour is acceptable, it may be worth taking a step back.Liking someone can make you focus heavily on their potential while ignoring what is actually happening in front of you.You do not need to turn every imperfect moment into a deal-breaker. But you also do not need to become someone’s defence lawyer this early in the relationship.

4. You feel like you have to perform around them

There is a difference between wanting to make a good impression and feeling like you cannot be yourself.Maybe you are constantly checking your messages before sending them. You worry about looking “too interested”. You pretend to like things because they do. You avoid talking about certain parts of your life because you think they might judge you.A little nervousness is normal when you like someone. But if dating them slowly starts feeling like an audition, notice that. The right connection does not mean you will never feel insecure. It means you gradually feel safe enough to let your guard down instead of becoming more and more conscious of how you are being perceived.

5. You leave most conversations feeling worse about yourself

Pay attention to how you feel after spending time with someone, not just how excited you feel when their name appears on your phone.Do you generally feel heard, respected and comfortable? Or do you regularly leave conversations overthinking what you said, questioning your appearance, comparing yourself to other people or wondering whether you were “good enough”?Someone can be charming, attractive and fun to talk to and still not be good for you.Early dating is not just about figuring out whether the other person wants you. It is also about noticing what the connection is bringing out in you.You do not have to walk away from someone because every date was not perfect. But if a pattern is making you feel smaller, more anxious or less like yourself, it deserves your attention.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
