August Electricity Bills may bring another shock due to tariff adjustment mechanism

LAHORE – Electricity consumers may soon face another financial blow as Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) approached National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to allow it to recover Rs2.35 billion through the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism.

The request covers April to June period and, if approved, could bring another increase in electricity bills for millions of consumers across LESCO’s service area. The utility cited multiple factors behind the proposed recovery, including the gap between electricity generation and actual sales, rising capacity payments, higher fuel costs, transmission charges, the financial impact of net-metering consumers, and other operational expenses.

LESCO argues that electricity demand has declined significantly, pushing up the cost of supplying each unit of power. The company says its fixed costs remain largely unchanged even when fewer units of electricity are sold, making tariff adjustments necessary to recover expenses.

Official documents reveal that household electricity consumption dropped by 8% compared to the same period last year, while commercial electricity usage fell by 7%. Overall electricity consumption across the LESCO network declined by around 4%, reflecting weaker demand.

The power distributor maintains that the fall in consumption has increased the per-unit cost of electricity, creating a financial shortfall that it now wants consumers to cover through the quarterly adjustment.

NEPRA will examine the petition before issuing a final decision on whether the requested recovery should be approved and, if so, how much of the additional burden will be passed on to electricity consumers.
