American actor Joe Manganiello has opened up about a serious health battle that he kept private for years.
The 49-year-old actor shared details of the ordeal in a recent Instagram post ahead of the release of his memoir, Bloodlines, in which he discusses a seven-year struggle with illness that nearly cost him his life.
The book is said to disclose how Joe’s health suddenly began to decline without warning. He said several autoimmune illnesses affected parts of his body, including his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs, and digestive system, leaving him in constant pain.
The actor also underwent a “life-saving organ amputation.”
Doctors were unable to fully explain what was causing his condition, leaving him searching for answers.
Speaking about the experience in a recent interview, Joe described it as the most difficult period of his life which came packed with existential crisis, and a prolonged fight for survival”.
“It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” he told People Magazine.
As traditional treatments failed to provide clear answers, Joe began exploring other paths. His search took him around the world, where he learned more about his family history, spirituality and personal identity.
The journey also led him to discover more about his ancestors and their survival during the Armenian genocide.
Joe said he hopes sharing his story will help others facing similar health challenges.
The actor has also experienced major changes in his personal life during the last several years. In 2023, he and actress Sofia Vergara announced their separation after seven years of marriage. Their divorce was finalised in 2024.
Since then, Joe has become engaged to Caitlin O’Connor, and the couple have relocated from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh.
