Guide Aims to Secure Agricultural Water Supply Chains
A new step-by-step framework helps companies identify and mitigate water-related risks across global farming supply networks.
A new playbook designed to help corporations secure their agricultural networks against worsening global water scarcity was released last week by water strategy and data analytics consultancy Bluerisk.
The guide, titled “Accelerating Water Action in Agricultural Supply Chains: Practical Steps for Building Supply Chain Water Resilience,” outlines actionable measures to combat escalating environmental risks. The release comes at a critical time for global commerce, as agricultural production accounts for more than 70% of global freshwater consumption.
While corporate momentum has grown around mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, many companies have lagged in addressing critical water vulnerabilities. The new framework directly targets this corporate gap, offering a structured starting point for businesses regardless of their size or supply chain visibility.
The framework aligns with existing regulatory disclosure and reporting expectations, including the Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures and European Sustainability Reporting Standards. To maintain broad corporate utility, the publication complements current on-farm performance standards while remaining flexible and non-prescriptive across multiple industries.
Development of the document drew on insights from an external advisory group featuring global food, beverage and sustainability organizations, including Bunge, Diageo, Heineken, PepsiCo and the World Wildlife Fund.
