New Playbook Raises Environmental Concerns Over AI Data Center Expansion

The recommendations call for increased transparency, stronger environmental reviews, and greater community oversight as utilities and developers continue expanding large-scale AI infrastructure nationwide.

Environmental and civil rights advocates are calling for stronger oversight of AI data centers as concerns grow about the environmental impacts of rapid infrastructure expansion. A newly released playbook, 2026 Recommendations for Protecting Frontline Communities to Stop Dirty Data, outlines measures to address energy demand, water consumption, air pollution, and environmental justice concerns associated with large-scale data center development.

The report warns that hyperscale AI facilities can place significant strain on local power grids and water systems while increasing emissions from supporting energy infrastructure and backup generators. It also raises concerns about the concentration of these facilities near communities already facing environmental and economic challenges.

The recommendations call for greater transparency, stronger environmental reviews, community engagement, and increased regulatory oversight before new data center projects are approved.
