EPA Advances Updated PFAS Strategy Focused on Drinking Water and Enforcement
The agency’s revised PFAS strategy emphasizes drinking water protections, scientific research, cleanup efforts and enforcement tied to contamination from “forever chemicals.”
The EPA announced an updated strategy for addressing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), outlining plans focused on drinking water protections, scientific research, enforcement and remediation efforts tied to the chemicals commonly known as “forever chemicals.”
EPA officials said the agency’s revised PFAS approach is intended to create what it described as a “legally defensible, practical and scientifically grounded” framework for regulating and managing PFAS contamination across the United States. The strategy builds on previous federal PFAS initiatives while signaling that the agency may revisit or revise certain Biden-era regulatory actions.
According to EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, the agency plans to continue addressing PFAS contamination through actions tied to drinking water standards, testing requirements, cleanup efforts and scientific evaluation of PFAS compounds. The agency also said it intends to strengthen coordination across EPA programs and improve PFAS measurement and monitoring methods.
PFAS are a large class of synthetic chemicals used for decades in products including firefighting foam, nonstick cookware, stain-resistant materials, industrial processes and food packaging. The chemicals have become a major environmental and public health concern because many PFAS compounds do not break down easily in the environment and may accumulate in water, soil and the human body.
EPA’s updated strategy includes continued focus on restricting PFAS releases into air and water, improving contamination cleanup efforts and expanding scientific research tied to PFAS toxicity and exposure pathways. The agency also said it plans to develop additional testing methods and to improve information collection on PFAS air emissions and wastewater discharges.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debate over federal PFAS regulations, including legally enforceable drinking water standards finalized in 2024 for several PFAS compounds. Industry groups and some utilities have raised concerns about compliance costs and implementation timelines, while environmental organizations continue pushing for broader regulation of PFAS contamination.
EPA also indicated that it intends to continue efforts to hold major PFAS polluters accountable while providing additional clarity for water utilities and other entities that may be affected by PFAS contamination but did not manufacture the chemicals.
Environmental experts say PFAS regulation will likely remain a rapidly evolving area as federal agencies, states and industries continue addressing contamination linked to drinking water systems, industrial sites, airports, military facilities and manufacturing operations.
EPA officials said additional PFAS-related actions and rulemaking efforts are expected as the agency continues implementing its broader PFAS strategy.
