Noah Kahan’s shocking ‘self-destructive’ thoughts come to light after old friend’s death

Noah Kahan opened up about how the death of his friend Carlo impacted his life.

The 29-year-old American singer-songwriter gave an interview to Rolling Stone for its cover story, published on Tuesday, May 5, where he revealed that the tattoo of a fire tower on his arm is an homage to Carlo.

Kahan told the outlet that he last saw his late friend, who succumbed to a “sudden illness, when they climbed a fire tower together in Vermont. Without knowing that would be their last hangout, they both fell in love with the fall foliage, enjoyed music, and smoked cigarettes.

Articulating his thoughts, he said, “It was my first really good friend that I lost. I didn’t handle it very well. I was spiraling, and a little bit self-destructive.”

The Hurt Somebody crooner struggled to admit that Carlo was no more, as he kept “messaging him on Facebook for days and days afterwards.”

“One of the last messages he sent me was to hang out, and we didn’t end up getting to. It changed something in me, and it made me remember that every moment is fleeting,” Kahan recalled.

It is pertinent to mention that the void Carlo’s death has created in the Cape Elizabeth hitmaker’s life cannot be filled, as his latest album, The Great Divide, which he dropped on April 24, 2026, has a song titled Dan where he revisits the loss of his pal.

“Everybody’s asleep, let’s talk about him. Let’s talk about high school, talk about death,” Noah Kahan sings in the song.
