Taylor Swift has opened up about fan theories surrounding her music.
Speaking with The New York Times, the Love Story singer admitted that some fan theories can feel “weird” when taken too far.
Addressing the extreme obsession of fans, Swift said, “I have to know that there’s certain things that we have as a tradition between me and my fans.”
“They love for an emotional song to be Track 5 [on an album],” she added.
Noting, “There’s special things like that, but at the same time, there are so many of them — which is great — but there’s corners of my fan base who are gonna take things to a really extreme place. There’s nothing I can do about that.”
Swift also noted that she has “detectives” in her fan base who figure out details behind her songs, making her uncomfortable. “When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s sort of a paternity test.”
“Like, ‘This song’s about that person,’ because I’m like, ‘That dude didn’t write the song, I did’,” Swift said.
However, Taylor Swift says she’s aware ahead of the release of the track that it is up for interpretation. “There it goes! Hope you like it! And if you never do, then I was doing it for me anyway.”
It is pertinent to mention that the singer’s latest album The Life of a Showgirl also became part of fan theories. While most of it was inspired by her relationship with Travis Kelce, fans also theorized her exes including, Joe Alwyn, Joe Jonas and Matt Healy.
