Hanford Contractor Earns National Award for Geospatial Innovation
A regional prime contractor received the Making a Difference award for utilizing digital mapping to streamline environmental cleanup efforts.
The Hanford Site’s essential services prime contractor received national recognition for its use of geographic information systems to modernize site operations and cleanup efforts.
Hanford Mission Integration Solutions (HMIS) accepted the Making a Difference award at the annual FedGIS conference, an event for geospatial professionals in government. The award honors organizations that apply geographic information system (GIS) technology to improve operations and community outcomes.
Esri, a global developer of GIS software, selected HMIS for the award based on the contractor’s application of mapping technology to the Hanford mission. HMIS uses the tools to manage infrastructure, enhance emergency response and support environmental management practices.
GIS technology allows the contractor to integrate complex data into visual maps, creating a more efficient approach to managing the 580-square-mile site. By streamlining infrastructure and cleanup logistics, the technology helps advance the federal government’s long-term environmental remediation goals.
During the conference in Washington, D.C., Esri President Jack Dangermond presented the award to HMIS Geospatial Information Systems Manager Elizabeth Schutte and Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Jason Walli.
