Karachi sees widespread rain with thunderstorms

KARACHI: Rainfall was reported in multiple areas of the city on Thursday, with intermittent showers continuing across several neighbourhoods.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms in Karachi later in the day.

Areas including Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Maymar and their surroundings received rain, while thunderstorm activity was recorded near the airport and Malir. Other localities such as Old City Area, Saddar, Korangi, Defence and Clifton also experienced rainfall.

Intermittent showers were also reported in Malir, Quaidabad, Landhi and PECHS, while Shah Faisal Colony, Nazimabad and Garden saw rain in phases.

According to the Met Office, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 23.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is expected to reach 27°C. Humidity levels were recorded at 83%, contributing to the prevailing weather conditions.

The Sindh government is on alert in view of the rains in Karachi, Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon said. He stated that advance arrangements to deal with the rainfall have been completed, while staff leave has been cancelled.

Additional dewatering pumps have been installed to drain water from low-lying areas, he added. Choking points across the city have been identified, with personnel deployed for monitoring. The government has placed relevant departments and municipal authorities on high alert, Memon said.
