Chicken prices have surged across Hyderabad as rising summer temperatures reduce poultry supply.
Chicken prices have risen sharply in recent days, mainly due to reduced poultry supply and the impact of rising summer temperatures. Traders say the heat has begun affecting poultry farms, leading to lower availability of chicken in the market and pushing prices upward.
According to reports, chicken prices in Hyderabad have surged significantly, with skinless chicken touching around Rs 325 per kilogram on Saturday. Native chicken is selling at even higher rates, ranging between Rs 750 and Rs 800 per kilogram. Prices have been steadily increasing over the past four days, surprising many consumers.
What Is Driving The Surge?
Traders attribute the surge primarily to the intense summer heat. Sources say several chickens have died due to high temperatures in farms and storage facilities, resulting in a sharp decline in available stock. Lower poultry arrivals into Hyderabad markets have further tightened supply.
Industry estimates suggest that around 10000 tonnes of chicken are sold daily across Greater Hyderabad. During major festivals such as Dasara, Deepavali, Sankranti and Ramzan, daily consumption usually rises to about 15000 to 16000 tonnes.
Bulk Buying Adds Pressure On City Markets
Wholesale traders and small retailers typically maintain stock sufficient for a week to ten days. However, rising temperatures have reportedly caused poultry deaths in several farms and storage units, reducing the amount of chicken available for sale.
Traders also point out that buyers from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh have been purchasing poultry in bulk from farms located around Hyderabad, Shamshabad, Shadnagar and Mahabubnagar. This increased bulk buying has further strained supply in city markets.
With supply tightening and demand remaining steady, traders have increased retail prices for the limited stock available.
Demand Remains Strong Despite Price Hike
Until recently, chicken prices were around Rs 300 per kilogram. However, the rates have now climbed by nearly Rs 25 to Rs 40 in many areas, adding to the financial burden on consumers. Despite the price rise, demand for chicken remains strong, especially on Sundays when non-vegetarian lovers flock to markets.
There is, however, some relief for consumers when it comes to egg prices. In Hyderabad, the price of a dozen eggs is currently around Rs 64, with traders saying egg prices have slightly declined over the past few days.
Prices May Rise Further
Poultry industry experts warn that temperatures are likely to increase further in the coming weeks. If the heat continues to affect poultry farms and supply remains limited, chicken prices could rise even more. Some traders estimate that prices may even reach Rs 400 per kilogram if the situation persists.
For now, while the rising prices are disappointing for consumers, the demand for chicken in the city shows little sign of slowing down.
