Henkel Launches Cold Seal for Paper Packaging

New adhesive technology enables high-speed production of recyclable paper structures for heat-sensitive snacks and confectionery.

Henkel has launched a new cold seal solution designed specifically for barrier-coated paper packaging, addressing a technological gap in the industry’s shift toward plastic-to-paper conversion.

The product, Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, arrives as manufacturers face increasing pressure from the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and shifting consumer preferences. According to a GlobalData industry report, more than 70% of global consumers now view recyclable packaging as a priority.

The solution allows for a secure seal without the application of heat. This is a critical requirement for the snack, ice cream and confectionery sectors, where products are sensitive to thermal exposure. By eliminating heat from the sealing process, manufacturers can preserve product quality and aroma while reducing mechanical stress on the paper material.

The adhesive is part of a product family specifically developed for recycling-compatible design. Its compatibility with mechanical paper recycling has been verified by an accredited certification institute, ensuring the material can return to the circular economy.

“Henkel delivers attested cold seal performance on barrier-coated paper and packaging solutions that meet the requirements for a circular economy,” said Cagri Turkmen, market strategy manager for flexible packaging at Henkel.

The coating is designed for high-speed production lines and maintains stability across various paper weights. It is also formulated to resist common migrants found in paper substrates, which prevents performance fluctuations during the manufacturing process.

While initially targeted at food segments, the solution is also applicable to secondary packaging and collection cards that previously relied on plastic-heavy structures.
