Apple to Shift Some Mac Mini Production to US Amid Tariff Uncertainty – SUCH TV

Apple Inc. announced on Tuesday that it will move part of its Mac Mini desktop computer production from Asia to the United States, with manufacturing set to begin later this year at a facility in Houston, Texas.

The company said it will also expand its Houston operations to include a new advanced manufacturing training center, adding that the move is expected to create thousands of jobs.

Major US Investment Push

The announcement builds on Apple’s earlier pledge to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years.

CEO Tim Cook said the company remains “deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing.”

Apple has already begun producing AI servers in Houston, with the company noting that production is ahead of schedule.

Tariff Pressure and Policy Shifts

The move comes amid renewed tariff uncertainty under President Donald Trump.

In May, Trump threatened Apple with a 25% tariff on products manufactured overseas, reversing earlier exemptions that had shielded smartphones and electronics from duties on Chinese imports.

Recently, the United States imposed a new 10% tariff on goods not covered by exemptions, following a Supreme Court ruling that struck down earlier tariff measures.

Mixed Track Record

Apple has previously announced US manufacturing initiatives.

In 2019, Cook toured a Texas facility promoted as a new production site, though the plant had been assembling Apple computers since 2013. Production was later shifted to Thailand.

Despite the latest move, Apple continues to manufacture most of its products — including iPhones and iPads — in Asia, primarily in China, while gradually diversifying to countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, and India.

The shift in Mac Mini production signals a strategic effort to reduce tariff risks and strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity amid evolving trade policies.
