As the federal government vowed action against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) following its “do-or-die” protest in Islamabad, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has called the former ruling party “a group of terrorists” that she believes must be “eradicated”.
The chief minister made these comments while addressing launching ceremony of “Suthra Punjab” — an initiative aimed at improving sanitation conditions in entire Punjab.
Stressing that it is necessary to clean political filth from Pakistan like streets, CM Maryam said the current leadership has spent previous four years in rallies and processions without any violence.
“Those who call themselves democratic, should also behave in a democratic manner. As long as you continued to hold rallies and processions, no one stopped you,” she said.
The former ruling party’s three-day protests, aimed at securing Imran Khan’s release, was abruptly ended after fierce clashes erupted between the law enforcers and the protesters, leaving four law enforcers and allegedly at least 12 protesters dead.
“No one is willing to trust those who attacked their own country on May 9. Neither they are peaceful nor holding peaceful protests, no peaceful protest was carried out on November 24,” said CM Maryam.
Speaking about the clashes, Maryam said that the PTI protesters “committed a lot of atrocities on the law enforcement personnel” which left her stunned.
“The PTI workers captured Superintendent of Police alone and inflicted wounds on his head with nailed sticks. Where in the world such a peaceful protest is held? PTI failed to carry out any peaceful sit-in or protests since 2014,” she regretted.
The CM also talked about the PTI’s claims of workers being killed, asking why they did not make a video of killing people. “
“The mastermind is sitting in jail, now he cannot undergo imprisonment. This is a group of terrorists, it must be eradicated. If you commit unlawful activities then a stern action will be taken against you,” said CM Maryam.
She said that she wants the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet to also formulate plans for the welfare of people. “The KP cabinet discusses to purchase of tear gas shells and vehicles used for attacks. Government employees are made to launch attack by wearing plain clothes. Putting a province before the federation is a dangerous trend and a criminal mindset,” she highlighted.
Maryam said that she can be a democratic activist, but not a violent activist, adding that people convey their point of views to the relevant stakeholders in peaceful protests.
