After releasing the new privacy call relay feature on its platform, the instant messaging application WhatsApp is reportedly planning another important security feature.
According to a report, the Meta-owned app is working on an alternate profile privacy feature.
“Thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.24.4 update, which is available on the Google Play Store, we discovered that WhatsApp is working on an alternate profile feature as a new tool to mask your information, and it will be available in a future update of the app,” WABetaInfo reported.
According to the report, a new alternate profile feature will be available within the privacy screen regarding profile photo and it allows users to configure a different photo and name that will be visible to those contacts who cannot see their primary profile information.
For example, if only your contacts can see your profile photo, this means that people outside your contact list cannot see it but they will be able to see your alternate profile picture. The same feature will also be accessible within your profile section.
The report suggested that the alternate profile feature can serve as a protective shield. It will add a new layer of security and privacy to the user experience as they have finally more control over their information.
Also, users will be able to maintain a higher level of privacy by configuring an alternate profile and choosing different information in the future.
“We think that this feature will prove highly advantageous once the ability to set up a WhatsApp username becomes available in the future. By setting up an alternate profile, even users who contact you through a username will still have access to view your profile, but it will be different from your primary one,” the WABetaInfo said.
