Indian badminton ace PV Sindhu offered some valuable suggestions to Vinod Kambli, hinting at his ongoing financial crisis. The former India cricketer is going through a turbulent period with his health deteriorating in recent times and economically also, he is struggling a lot. He receives a monthly pension of Rs 30,000 from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which remains his only source of income at present. According to Sindhu, Kambli might not have faced this issue if he invested wisely in the past instead of “spending lavishly”.
In December last year, Kambli attended the inauguration of a memorial for legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park. A video of the event went viral on social media where Kambli was captured greeting Sachin Tendulkar. The 52-year-old even tried to sing a song at the event but his incoherent speech sparked concerns regarding his health.
Responding to the viral footage, Sindhu shared that she “got a bit emotional” after seeing Kambli in that condition. “There are ups and downs in life. You need to be careful and surround yourself with people who guide you,” the two-time Olympic medalist told NDTV India.
Sindhu further shared her thoughts on Kambli’s financial woes while pointing out the significance of smart investment. “It is important that you manage smartly. You have to invest in a way that is also useful for you in the future. That’s why I say that you have to invest and take care of your money and not spend lavishly,” the 29-year-old said.
“You have to invest carefully. When you are a top athlete, you get amounts from people who support you. You have to be very careful. You need to pay your taxes. It is important. If you don’t, you are in trouble,” she added.
Sindhu who recently got married to Venkata Datta Sai also opened up about how she had managed to avoid any sort of financial crisis. “I am managed by my parents. My husband takes care of my investments. Till now, I haven’t had any financial struggles, and I am grateful for that,” she said.
Members of the 1983 World Cup winning squad including Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar have extended their support to Kambli. Following the event at Shivaji Park, Kambli required medical attention due to a urinary tract infection and cramps. He was hospitalised in Thane and was discharged earlier this month after being diagnosed with brain clots.
