Uttarakhand Foundation Day is observed on November 9 to mark the creation of the new state of Uttarakhand as the 27th state of India. This day has its representation in the diverse southern culture, and the spiritual significance of Devbhoomi, also known as the Land of the Gods. On this occasion, here are some important facts regarding the state, its history, climate, festivals and greetings to be conveyed.

UTTARAKHAND FOUNDATION DAY 2024: 10 FACTS ABOUT DEVBHOOMI

    1. Uttarakhand was established on November 9, 2000, from parts of the hilly area of Uttar Pradesh after a long struggle for a separate state beginning in the 1990s.
    2. The geographical area of the state is 53,566 km², of which 86% is a mountain region, and about 65% of the total area is a forest region, which is a conservation hotspot zone.
    3. Uttarakhand embraces a rich cultural heritage expressed in handcrafts, traditional dances, music, languages (Kumaoni and Garhwali) and other art forms like Aipan painting and wood carving.
    4. It is home to the Char Dham – Badri, Kedar, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
    5. The main source of income involves agriculture, tourism as well as power generation from the several hydropower plants. It is also famous for the production of fruits such as apples and litchis.
    6. On the basis of climate, the region can be categorised into subtropical climate in the lower regions and alpine climate in higher altitudes that affect plant and animal species.
    7. The state houses the Jim Corbett National Park which is the first of its kind in India and is renowned for its wildlife including tigers, and elephants.
    8. It has many famous educational institutions, such as Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.
    9. Some popular fairs and festivals are Kumbh Mela (occurring every 12 years), Nanda Devi Mela, local harvest festival etc.
    10. In handling the impact of climate change, the state government pays attention to sustainable tourism and ecological management.

UTTARAKHAND FOUNDATION DAY 2024: HISTORY OF DEVBHOOMI

The demand for a new state started or at least grew because people believed that the Uttar Pradesh government ignored the hilly areas of the state in terms of development and infrastructure. The activism escalated after massive demonstrations in the 1990s, claiming many lives. After several rounds of discussion and consideration by the public as well as the commencement of a new session in parliament, the new state of Uttarakhand came into existence under the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2000 on November 9, 2000.

UTTARAKHAND FOUNDATION DAY 2024: CLIMATE OF DEVBHOOMI

  • Lower Regions: It has a subtropical climate meaning that during the summer it is very hot while during the winter it is very cold.
  • Higher Regions: The climate is predominated by the alpine climate with a snowy winter.
  • Monsoon Season: The rainy season is effective from June to September, key for farming.

UTTARAKHAND FOUNDATION DAY 2024: KEY FESTIVALS OF DEVBHOOMI

  1. Kumbh Mela: One of the biggest pilgrimages for Hindus occurring once, every 12 years.
  2. Nanda Devi Mela: Customarily observed in honour of the Goddess Nanda.
  3. Harela: A harvest festival celebrated in the month of Shravan or Sawan, which is the first month of monsoon season.
  4. Makar Sankranti: A thanksgiving festival, also associated with flying kites.
